Rampage Soar Past Comets in Shootout 3-2

Box Score | Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 13, 2014) – The San Antonio Rampage (14-20-1-3) took their sixth shootout win of the year in their first ever match up with the Utica Comets (11-19-2-3) 3-2 tonight in front of a crowd of 2,887 at the AT&T Center.

Quinton Howden and Jared Gomes scored in regulation, with Gomes’ goal coming as his first on the year. Greg Rallo had the primary assist on both for a two-point night, while Howden and Gomes each had assists of their own to record two-point nights as well. Jacob Markstrom made 34 saves in regulation, and stopped all five skaters in the shootout to earn the win. Bobby Butler tallied the lone goal in the skills competition to ice it in favor of the Silver and Black.

The first period was all about the Howden-Gomes-Rallo line, as the trio combined for both Rampage goals in the opening frame. Howden struck first at 7:34, picking up a Rallo feed from down low and firing it from just above the crease to make it 1-0.

Six minutes later, they made magic again, and this time it was Gomes who got the tally. Rallo’s shot took a big rebound off of Utica net-minder Mathieu Corbeil, and Gomes ripped it backdoor at 13:46 to make it 2-0.

Less than three minutes after the Gomes marker, the Comets finally put themselves in the game. Winger Nicklas Jensen capitalized on a rebound and beat Markstrom at 16:22 to make it 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Though the Rampage had a brief power play chance, they were unable to cash in, and Utica couldn’t make anything click either, so the Rampage took their 2-1 lead into the third period.

With 6:39 remaining in the third period, Jensen netted his second of the night to tie it up at two and eventually send the game into overtime for the second straight night at the AT&T Center. The extra session wasn’t enough, and Butler scored the lone goal in the skills competition to win it for the Rampage, 3-2.

The Rampage were outshot 36-24 on the night, and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Utica went 0-for-2 with the extra man.

The Rampage host the Milwaukee Admirals on Thursday, Jan. 16 in their second of three games this week. The game falls on an All-You-Can-Eat Night, where $20 includes a ticket and unlimited hot dogs, nachos, soda, peanuts, and popcorn. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com.
