Forward Garry Nunn Collects 200th Professional Assist
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 17, 2017) – The Grand Rapids Griffins (33-14-1-2) recorded three first-period goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the San Antonio Rampage (21-26-4-1) on Friday night at Van Andel Arena. Forward Garry Nunn registered the 200th assist of his professional career.
Grand Rapids jumped to an early lead in the first when Martin Frk blasted a shot from the point past Rampage netminder Kent Simpson 6:30 into the frame. The Griffins extended their lead to two when Mitch Callahan cleaned up a rebound at the front door of Simpson’s cage at 10:55. A Griffins power-play goal on a five-on-three situation from Matthew Ford at the 13:17 mark gave Grand Rapids a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Rampage recorded their lone goal of the game midway through the second when Troy Bourke finished off a pass from Nunn and Eric Gelinas at the 11:17 mark. However, Grand Rapids responded when a blocked Rampage shot gave the Griffins a three-on-one advantage, giving Dominic Turgeon an open look at the back of the net for a 4-1 lead 16:41 into the frame.
Despite outshooting the Griffins 14-8 in the third period, a late Griffins goal from Eric Tangradi at 17:31 solidified the 5-1 victory for Grand Rapids.
