COMRIE BACKSTOPS MOOSE PAST RAMPAGE
WINNIPEG, MB (JAN. 19, 2019) –Hunter Fejes’ first goal of the season was the game-winner and Eric Comrie made 37 saves to lead the Manitoba Moose (18-18-3) to a 4-1 win over the San Antonio Rampage (21-19-1) on Saturday afternoon at Bell MTS Place. The Rampage saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, while the Moose improved to 6-0-1 over their last seven home games.
Austin Poganskiscored the lone goal for the Rampage, tying the game 1-1 early in the second period. Jared Coreau made 25 saves in a losing effort, as the Rampage lost their third game at Bell MTS Place this season.
Former Rampage forward Logan Shaw opened the scoring just ten seconds into the first period, taking a Jansen Harkins feed at the bottom of the left circle and beating Coreau between the pads for his 16thgoal of the season and a 1-0 Moose lead. Shaw has four goals in his last six contests.
The Rampage responded at 1:26 of the second period. Tyler Wotherspoon fired a pass from the Rampage zone across the ice to Joey LaLeggia skating over the Manitoba blue line. LaLeggia quickly slid a pass to the slot for Poganski to chip past Comrie for his sixth goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.
Wotherspoon has nine points in his last ten games.
Manitoba jumped back in front at 8:16 of the second. After a lengthy shift in the offensive zone for the Rampage, Jordan Schmaltz point shot was blocked between the circles by Kristian Reichel. Fejes sprang out into the neutral zone to receive a pass from Reichel and skate in on a breakaway, beating Coreau to the blocker for his first goal of the year and a 2-1 Moose lead.
The Rampage fired 35 shots on goal over the final two periods, but could not put another puck past Comrie. The Moose goaltender made consecutive sprawling saves on Adam Musil in the second period, and a point-blank glove save on LaLeggia late in the third period.
The Moose extended their lead with 2:58 left in regulation when Brent Pedersen caught up to a puck chipped into the Rampage zone and drove to the net. Coreau made the initial save, but Pedersen got his own rebound for his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1 Manitoba.
JC Lipon added his seventh of the season into an empty net with 22 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.
Nolan Stevens returned to the lineup after an eight-game absence due to injury. He earned a plus-1 rating.
Moose forward Seth Griffith extended his points streak to five games, with a goal and seven points over that span.
San Antonio is 4-13-1 on the road this season, and they have lost ten consecutive visits to Winnipeg dating back to their last win at Bell MTS Place on Feb. 11, 2011.
The Rampage and Moose take the ice again on Sunday afternoon at Bell MTS Place for another 2 p.m. puck-drop. The game is available on the Ticket 760AM and on AHLTV.
