Rampage Sled Hockey Team Takes Second

By: San Antonio Rampage Media Relations

SAN ANTONIO (February 12, 2013) – The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team, the two-time defending champions of the Midwest Sled Hockey League, finished second in their tournament last weekend at Northwoods Ice and Golf Center, posting a 3-1-0 record in four games.

The tournament consisted of the Rampage and the three other teams in the Midwest Sled Hockey League. San Antonio opened up the tournament with a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Sled Hockey team on Friday night. They followed up that effort with a 4-2 win over the RIC Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday morning.

However, the Rampage dropped their lone game of the weekend on Saturday night during the team’s Military Appreciation game to the DASA St. Louis Blues, 2-1. San Antonio wrapped up second place in the tournament with a 5-3 win over the Florida Bandits Sled Hockey Team on Sunday afternoon. With this weekend’s results, the Rampage remain in second place in the league with playoffs starting in March.

“Overall it was a really good weekend,” said Josh Sweeney, who led the Rampage with seven points on the weekend. “It was a disappointing loss to St. Louis but we played hard and gave it our all. The turnout from the fans was great and it was exciting to play in front of such a good crowd here in San Antonio.”

The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team features three U.S. National Sled Hockey Team members with Sweeney, Rico Roman and Jen Yung Lee. The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team won the 2012 International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship in Hamar, Norway, and the 2012 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Calgary, Alta.

The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team was the first team to form that consists of all wounded military service members. The team is run by Operation Comfort, a nonprofit organization that works with wounded Service Members coming from Iraq and Afghanistan who are recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas.

The Rampage Sled Hockey Team was formed in January 2007 and was adopted by the San Antonio Rampage shortly thereafter. The Rampage (AHL) continues to host various fundraising events, including their annual Military Appreciation Night on March 2, to raise money to support the Rampage Sled Hockey Team. The sled hockey team started with seven players and has quickly gained popularity in which the team now consists of more than 20 players. The team began playing in tournaments in 2008 and has since traveled throughout the United States.

The Rampage (AHL) will host their 10th annual Military Appreciation Night, sponsored by Champion A.C., on Saturday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. at AT&T Center. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
